The cries rising in the dark are ours;

The shadows of the world, ours;

The monsters that haunt us, ours.

We bought our own damnation –

 

In a ray of light 

(Martyr’s delight)

I am writing a life

For a woman who dies

Over and over again

Her fate a blood-stained

Iron cage — no.

 

I want to write a life 

For the unchained.

 

Write the sky

When the stars are high

Write the plight

When the past is a lie

And live in freedom,

Free to walk the earth again,

Free to meet, smile, grow

Beyond a screen, plain.

Beyond slaving, go.

 

We can live free –

If only we had the idea,

If only we knew how —
